Since their victory in the first-ever Twenty20 World Cup in 2007, India hasn’t been able to take home the trophy. Despite being one of the favorites going into the competition, they were unable to get to the knockout rounds in the most recent iteration. However, according to Rohit Sharma, it does not indicate that the squad takes a “cautious approach” to the structure of the game. On the other hand, he said that the administration of the squad has recently allowed the players to play without restrictions.
Rohit said this the day before the first Twenty20 International (T20I) match against West Indies. “We haven’t gotten the results in the World Cups, but it doesn’t imply we were playing awful cricket for so many years,” Rohit remarked. I disagree with the assessment that we were playing a cautious game of cricket. When you lose an unusual game at the World Cup, it seems as if we were doing things wrong and we didn’t take enough opportunities. But if you take a closer look, you’ll see that we won the vast majority (or at least the majority) of the games leading up to the World Cup. If you play it safe, you won’t come out on top in any of these matches.
“Yes, we weren’t able to qualify [for the knockouts in 2021], but unfortunately, things like that do occur. This in no way indicates that we were unable to play freely. Even in recent times, we have not made any such adjustments; we are continuing to play in the same fashion, but we have given the players more leeway to play the game as they see fit. Because if you play freely, you will get better performances out of your instrument.
“Those who are outside should, therefore, exercise patience. Because of the manner we are playing, we are going to have some setbacks, and the outcome may not always go the way we want it to. However, this does not indicate that the players on the squad are not talented enough or that the team itself is not talented enough. It’s that we’re looking to shake things up a little and try something else. Everyone must inevitably evolve with the passage of time. We are evolving, and those who see us from a distance need to adjust the way they think as well.
Within the last week, head coach Rahul Dravid has been discussing the possibility of playing “a somewhat more offensive type of cricket.” The outcomes are out in the open for everybody to observe. This year, India has scored at a rate of 9.45 runs per over in Twenty20 International cricket, which is their greatest scoring rate in a calendar year in which they have played more than one match. This year, India has scored at a pace that is quicker than any other team that has competed.
Rohit said that one strategy for encouraging players to bat freely was to instruct them to do so as if they were competing for their own organizations or state teams and to refrain from focusing too much on the outcomes of their at-bats.
“During the preparation, we may speak about technique and everything else, but during the match, players should be allowed the freedom to make their own decisions,” he stated. We are instructing them to play the game in the manner in which they play for their state or franchise. Since they don’t buckle under too much strain there, it’s only natural that they would do the same thing here. Of course, playing cricket stage brings a different kind of strain, but it is the responsibility of team management to lessen the pressure and, if at all possible, do away with it entirely. Therefore, in an effort to provide the boys with an atmosphere in which they may play without worrying too much about how well they are doing, we are working to create this setting.
Another thing that the team is concentrating on is making the atmosphere the way it should be. They have decided to bring back Paddy Upton as their mental fitness coach since Rohit believed that his presence may “make a difference.”
“Off the field, too, it is crucial that players remain together, have fun together, and pull each other’s legs,” he added. “On the field, we play as a unit anyhow, but it is also important that players stay together.” “That is something that helps to foster a positive atmosphere for the team. Therefore, we are concentrating on that as well, namely how we can maintain a light-hearted atmosphere while still having fun.
“I believe that having him [Upton] as part of the team would be beneficial to all of the. He has a wealth of knowledge gained through working with a variety of teams in a variety of settings. He will most certainly contribute to the picture by bringing the cerebral aspect of the game into play. He has previous experience working with the Indian squad. He was a member of the side that triumphed at the World Cup in 2011, and he has also seen some measure of success in franchise cricket.
In addition to that, he is familiar with a good number of the players since he has worked extensively with them. As is common knowledge, the mental aspect of the game is of the utmost significance. The combination of his expertise and his worldview, I believe, will be beneficial.
This is probably just his second or third day working with the team. It’s likely that he is merely keeping an eye on the folks he hasn’t collaborated with before. I have no doubt that he will begin his job very quickly, that he will start talking to the players, and that he will also gather their ideas. And without a doubt, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on the team. My gut tells me that he has the potential to be a game-changer for this squad.
