The Storyline of the Devdas Movie
Devdas is based on the classic 1917 novel of the same name by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The film revolves around the story of Devdas Mukherjee (portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan), an affluent law pass-out who makes a return from London with an ambition to marry his childhood friend, Parvati “Paro” (portrayed by Aishwarya Rai).
However, the refutation of their connubial by his own family sparks his descent into severe alcoholism, ultimately leading to his emotional deterioration and his seeking refuge with the golden-hearted courtesan Chandramukhi (played by Madhuri Dixit).
After his well-heeled family prohibits him from marrying the woman of his dreams, Devdas Mukherjee’s life spirals further and further out of control to a point where it blows out of proportion as he falls into the murky waters of alcohol abuse and a life of depravity to numb the stinging pain.
Devdas Mukherji is black-listed by his multi-millionaire Zamindar father, Narayan. After completing a decade year of higher education, Devdas decides to answer the call of his homecoming to his hometown where his family prepares to welcome him, but their happiness precipitates to ashes when Devdas prefers to visit the childhood love of his life, Parvati alias Paro, before paying reverence to his mother.
Even after all these years, Devdas discovers he still is a disgrace in his father’s eyes, especially when he is not permitted to marry Paro, who is shown as a woman of the “lower cast”. As time passes by Paro’s family arranges for her marriage to a much older man, Bhuvan Choudhry (played by Vijayendra Ghatge), whose children astonishingly are in her age group.
Doing what this call would do, the dismay not only breaks Devdas’ heart but confines him to alcohol in a big way. Shortly Devdas starts to pay visits to a brothel and grabs the attention of a prostitute named Chandramukhi. Slowly and gradually, Devdas treads ahead on the path of self-destruction.
