Hurdang is directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat and stars Sunny Kaushal. You may have seen him in the Shiddat movie Nushrratt Bharuccha, and Vijay Varma, among others. The Romantic drama hit theatres on 8th April 2022, and the streaming giant Netflix bought its digital streaming rights.
The Storyline of the movie ‘Hurdang’ Set in Allahabad, ‘Hurdang’ is a story of Daddu Thakur, Jhulan, Loha Singh, and Ranjan. It is the love story of Daddu Thakur, who belongs to the upper caste, and Jhulan Yadav, a simple girl from a lower caste family, set in the backdrop of the rebellion of students in Ahmedabad 1990 against the caste-based reservation that was recommended by the Mandal Commission.
Dadu aspires to become an IAS officer to marry Jhulan. However, he spends most of his time loitering around with Loha Singh, the leader of the students. Daddu and Jhulan have been together for ten years, but their love story isn’t smooth, as Jhulan’s father wants to get her married to an IAS officer. Hence, they are left with only two options, either Daddu becomes an IAS Officer, or they elope.
In order to increase the seats that will be reserved for the backward classes, the Government decided to implement the Mandal Commission. It is then that Loha sees this as an opportunity to enhance his mileage as a leader; he corrupts Daddu’s mind and asks him to protest against the proposal.
In Spite of several warnings against Loha by Jhulan and his best friend, Ranjan, Daddu is blinded and believes that Loha genuinely wants to help the students and the downtrodden. In the meantime, Jhulan’s parents are looking for an IAS Officer to get her married.
As the protests escalate, Daddu’s importance with respect to the protest and in the eyes of political overlords continues to grow, which makes him less accessible to Jhulan and increases the feelings of insecurity and jealousy in Loha Singh.
While Daddu was riding up the ladder of popularity, Jhulan’s father got to know of their affair, and he decided to rush to Varanasi to marry off Jhulan right away. In the rush of things, Jhulan didn’t get enough time to inform Daddu, she sent a message with her brother to one of Loha’s men, but Loha didn’t pass it along to Daddu.
As the story moves further, Daddu’s best friend Ranjan gets in the middle and gets killed while protecting Daddu from Loha’s orders to kill him off Daddu. Loha wanted sympathy votes over Daddu’s death. What will Daddu do to discover Loha’s truth? Will he avenge his best friend’s death? These questions are answered toward the end of the movie.
