Paheli is the story of how a ghost falls in love with a common village girl and how they find ways to live together.
Paheli is the remake of the 1973 Hindi movie Duvidha. The story is inspired by an ancient Rajasthani folk tale of a ghost who falls in love with a beautiful village girl. Paheli was released in 2005 with Shahrukh Khan (recently seen in and as Pathaan Rani Mukherji in the lead role.
The movie received mixed reactions from the audience and critics back then. Though the movie was not exactly a commercial success, Paheli was India’s official entry to the 79th Academy Awards.
The story is recited by two puppets, voiced by Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak.

The Storyline of the Movie “Paheli” The movie starts when a beautiful village girl, Lachchi, played by Rani Mukherji (last appeared in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway
Kishan is a man who has priorities set, and nothing matters to him more than earning money. Kishan has to leave Lachchi the very next day of their marriage on account of a business trip that will last for 5 years. Lachchi feels helpless and downhearted by the news. To her surprise, her husband comes back the very next day. The only thing is that this is not her real husband but a ghost who fell in love with her when she was traveling to her in-laws’ after the wedding.
The ghost pretends to be Kishan in front of everyone, and the whole family is excited to welcome back their son. On the same night, the ghost reveals its true identity in front of Lachchi, who now is contemplating if they should carry on with the lie or not.
Lachchi, being a simple girl who wants nothing more than love and affection, decides to carry on her life with the ghost.
Soon the real Kishan arrives back from his business trip while Lachchi gets pregnant with the ghost. Everyone, including the villagers, is confused as to who the real Kishan is and how they can spot him. A shepherd comes to the rescue and cunningly traps the ghost in a bottle helping out the villagers and the family.
Annoyed by all the revelations, Kishan throws the bottle in the middle of the desert. Soon the ghost escapes the bottle and inhibits Kishan’s body. Ghost again reveals its identity to Lachchi. She feels content as now she can be with both her husband and her ghost lover.
